A motorist has admitted causing the death of a popular Irish club cyclist by careless driving.
David Catherwood died in July of last year when out for a ride with a friend in Co Down.
And yesterday at Newtownards Magistrates Court motorist Lindsey Lorraine Huddleston pleaded guilty in relation to the fatal collision.
The 21-year-old is charged with causing the death of David Catherwood by driving carelessly on the Bangor Road, Holywood, on July 19th, 2016.
The deceased, aged 61 years at the time of his death, had been riding in the direction of Bangor with another cyclist.
It was 6.30am when they were hit by a white Mazda driven by Ms Huddleston. David Catherwood was fatally injured and his 30-year-old training partner suffered minor injuries.
The dead man had run his own security alarm business. A religious man, he was active in his local church and also carried out charity work.
He was a member of the Cycle 4 Christ cycling club. He was also a very well known and popular member of Mountpottinger Methodist.
At the time of Mr Catherwood’s death, High Sheriff of Belfast Jim Rodgers said he served alongside him on the board of governors at Ashfield Girls' School.
He was also a former Boys' Brigade captain in the 10th Belfast company.
Mr Rodgers said he was "totally devastated" at the death of Mr Catherwood, whom he described as a lifelong friend.
"I am so shocked and my thoughts are with his wife Janet and all his family circle,” he said at the time, leading many tributes.
“This is such dreadful news. He was such a wonderful guy with a fantastic personality.
"He was a hard worker and was very popular with everyone. No-one ever had a bad thing to say about Davy Catherwood.
"He will be sadly missed by a wide range of organisations and people but especially his wonderful family."
