A rider has crashed into the crowd at the Pan American Track Champs in Trinidad and Tobago.

The incident, in the clip below, occurred during the final of the keirin event.

An initial crash takes place with one faller before the remaining riders continue on their way.

However, on the final lap - as the sprint is about to start really winding up - another crash occurs. And this time it is not so straightforward.

The rider who shot up the banking and over the barriers was US track rider James Mellen.

The 21-year-old is a nine-time US track champion. He is currently the US elite sprint champion.

Mellen was also part of the US championship-winning team sprint line-up this year.

And he won keirin gold at the US track championships last year.

Despite the spectacular and high-speed nature of the crash no major injuries were reported.
