
A woman is undergoing medical treatment in hospital after a cycling crash with a truck being driven in Dublin’s north inner city.
The
lorry driver was travelling in Dorset St in his vehicle when the crash occurred.
The woman cycling was badly injured and was treated initially at the scene by
paramedics.
She
was then taken to hospital for further treatment and remained there on Thursday.
However,
while the Garda published a statement on the crash, which took place on
Wednesday night, there was no update on the woman’s condition.
“Gardaí were called to a serious road traffic collision on Dorset Street
with the junction of Eccles Street involving a female pedal cyclist and a lorry
driver,” a Garda statement said.
“The incident occurred on the 24th April 2019
at approximately 9.25pm,” said Celine Ross at the Garda press office.
“The female (24) has been removed to the Mater
Hospital with serious injuries but it is believed at this time, that her
injuries are not life threatening. Road has reopened and investigations
ongoing.”
Dorset St was closed in both directs between Blessington St and Eccles St while the injured woman was treated and the scene was examined.
A Garda investigation into the cause of the crash is continuing.
The crash that has left the woman injured has
come after a number of serious crashes, three of them fatal, in different parts
of the country.
Last Sunday 11-year-old Bridget Ward was killed
while cycling in Co Galway. She was cycling with her young brother when they
were involved in a crash with a motorists driver a car.
The
collision occurred at approximately 11:55am on the R358 Ballinasloe to
Ahascragh Road, Co Galway.
On
Sunday, April 7th, a woman in her 40s was killed while cycling in Co
Cork. The victim was involved in a crash with a motorist in a car near
Shepperton Lake in the Skibbereen area on the N71.
On
Thursday, March 28th, a man died from injuries he sustained eight
days earlier in an unexplained incident while cycling in Co Kerry/.
The dead man was found injured on the road at Colkeragh on the R552 between Ballylongford and Listowel.
Gardai believe he likely fell from his bike and sustained his injuries. They have said while the man’s death is still being investigated, a hit and run was not suspected.
