Cyclist races car, Luas, bus 4km across Dublin. Who won and by how much?

A cyclist has raced across Dublin city against a car, bus and Luas. Who do you think won and by how much? It's a very interesting result. And the race also places a cyclist into the experiment recently by RTE’s Prime Time, above, which pitted three modes of transport against each other, but no cyclist.

RTE’s Prime Time show performed a valuable public service last week with a transport race over 4.4km in Dublin.

The concept was a simple one; three reporters taking three modes of transport from point to point to see which was quicker.

Congestion, and Dublin traffic generally, has been in the news of late following the roll-out of the Luas CrossCity line.

It has been a success in terms of user demand. However, some believe it has made congestion worse around the city.

There has also been concern some streets are much more dangerous for cycling because of the track and trams.

And some Luas users have complained that they thought the trams would traverse the centre of Dublin more quickly.

So Prime Time put it to the test; its reporters racing from Phibsborough to Lesson Street Bridge.

There was only one problem; no cyclist in the race. Instead they used car, bus and Luas.

But now the Dublin Cycling Campaign has put that right. One of its members has cycled the journey at the same time – from 8:15am.

And the results, as they say, are in. The bike is miles faster.

The car took 43 mins, the bus 58 and the Luas over an hour.

When a Dublin Cycling Campaign member rode the route on Monday morning, it took them 23 minutes.

That’s a huge time difference. It means people going by Luas could afford to have almost an extra hour in bed every morning!

So cycling in Dublin rush hour traffic is the fastest mode of transport by far, who know?
