A cyclist has been attacked by a group of teenagers, beaten with rods and had his e-bike stolen on the Grand Canal Greenway.
Yaman Umuroğlu took to Twitter to warn others of the incident, saying he was ambushed when he came to a gate and was slowed.
He was then set upon by a group of teenagers, saying he believed some of his attackers may have been as young as 13 or 14 years.
"I was almost killed by a gang of lads armed with metal rods on the Grand Canal cycle path, ambushed at a squeeze stile," he said.
"They made off with my e-bike but not before beating me up. I have a split lip, a bruised thigh muscle and (am) pretty shaken, but otherwise OK."
Mr Umuroğlu added he had attended St James Hospital for treatment and planned to go for further medical attention on Tuesday.
He believed the gates acted as an ambush point and suggested their removal. He has reported the matter to the Garda.
"I don't want this to happen to anyone again. The cycle path itself is lovely and makes my commute to Citywest something to look forward to.
"But at night the squeeze stiles really do turn into 'ambush spots'."
The incident is the latest in a series of attacks and intimidating behaviour directed towards cyclists on the Grand Canal Greenway.
A number of cyclists have made the same complaint relating to the gates slowing their progress and making them vulnerable to attack.
In October stickybottle reported on an incident during which a cyclist had a firework directed at him on the greenway.
He was intimidated as be passed a group, one of whom lunged at him.
That incident was captured by the cyclist on video, which can be viewed by following this link.

I did, first thing. I hope the perpetrators get caught. They didn't look older than 13-14 and there was perhaps 4-5 of them, might be known to local Gardai. Getting rid of the ambush spots (squeeze styles) would be a help though!

Thanks! I reported it to the Gardai first thing. I'm shaken but OK, I got triage at St James and will go to a clinic tomorrow.

Thanks -- I have a split lip, a bruised thigh muscle and pretty shaken, but otherwise OK. Scary experience though!
