Tributes have been paid to the mother of four killed when she was in collision with a tractor while cycling yesterday. The crash was the 11th time this year a cyclist has died in the roads of the Republic.

The woman killed when she was in collision with a tractor while cycling in Co Cork yesterday has been named as mother if four Annette Carlos.

Garda said the 65-year-old died after being in collision with a tractor near Cobh, Co Cork, at about 1pm.

She was originally from Banagher, Co Offaly, but had been living in Cobh for many years.

Cllr Sinéad Sheppard, from Fine Gael, was a former neighbour of Ms Carlos and said everyone who knew the dead woman was greatly saddened.

“People in Cobh are absolutely shocked and so sad to hear the news. Annette was so well known in the community,” she said.

“You hear about accidents all the time but you never think it will happen to people in your own community.

“We are thinking of the Carlos family and sending them all our prayers.”

Melissa Fardey from Cobh knew Ms Carlos and said she was heartbroken at her death.

“Annette was a lovely woman, helped to make me feel at home when I first moved to Cobh from Canada,” she said.

“We are sending our thoughts and prayers to Mick and the whole family.”

Local man Alan Dwyer, who also knew Ms Carols and her family from Cobh, said the local community was in shock.

“Annette was a beautiful, warm, gentle friend to us all and this sudden loss is difficult to absorb,” he said.

Ms Carlos, who had two sons and two daughters, formerly owned the Roaring Donkey pub in Cobh with her husband.

The couple had retired from the business but staff there paid tribute to her.

“So sorry for Michael and family on the tragic passing of their cherished wife, mother and grandmother, Annette,” a social media post said.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.”

The Garda published a statement yesterday afternoon with details of the death of Ms Carlos.

“Gardaí are investigating a fatal road traffic collision involving a tractor and a female cyclist on the N28 Cork-Ringaskiddy Rd,” the Garda said.

“A cyclist in her 60s suffered serious injuries when she was involved in a collision with a tractor. The driver of the tractor was uninjured.

“The body of the woman has been removed to Cork University Hospital where a post mortem examination will take place.

“Traffic diversions are in place and forensic collision investigators are at the scene.”
