
Gardai are looking for witnesses to a crash that saw a 19-year-old cyclist lose his life when he was hit by a passing car.
A teenage cyclist has lost his life in Co Cork this evening after being hit by a car on a busy stretch of the N71.
The collision occurred just before 7pm on the N71 between Rosscarbery and Connonagh.
The Irish Independent reports the vehicle involved was passing the rider at the time on a section of the Cork to Bantry road.
The emergency services were call immediately the collision occurred and the injured cyclist was treated at the scene by paramedics.
However, while it was intended to taken him to Cork University Hospital, he died from his injuries.
The road when the crash occurred has been closed for a Garda examination and was expected to remain sealed off to traffic overnight.
Gardai have appealed for anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward in the hope they can assist with the inquiry.
The motorist whose car struck the rider was uninjured but was treated at the scene for shock.
The deceased, who is believed to be from west Cork, was the first cyclist to be killed on the roads of the Republic since the start of the year.
