Cyclist (10) airlifted to hospital after crash with driver in SUV

Gardai in Carlow are investigating a road traffic crash involving a driver in an SUV in which a boy aged 10 years was critically injured while cycling

A young boy has been left in critical condition after he was injured while cycling during a crash with a driver in an SUV.

The crash occurred in Co Carlow at lunchtime today, Thursday, and the boy’s condition in hospital was described as “critical” this evening.

He was treated by paramedics at the scene of the crash
before being taken by helicopter to Temple St Hospital in Dublin, which
specialises in treating children.

Gardai have launched an investigation into the crash and the road where it occurred remained sealed off to traffic on Thursday evening.

As part of the investigation gardai in Carlow have asked
for any witnesses in the area – Ballymartin in Borris - at the time to contact
them and give any information they have.

“Gardaí are investigating a road traffic collision involving a cyclist and a jeep that occurred in the Ballymartin area of Borris, Co Carlow, at approximately 1:30pm,” a Garda statement issued on Thursday evening said of the crash.

“The cyclist, a 10-year-old male, was airlifted from the scene to Temple Street Children's University Hospital.

“His condition is described as critical. The
scene is currently preserved for an examination by Garda Forensic Collision
Investigators.

“Gardaí are appealing for anyone with
information, particularly any road users who may have dash cam footage, to
