Musician suffers serious injuries in Dublin cycling crash with truck

While cycling on the quays in Dublin the drummer in indie band Glass Animals, Joe Seaward, suffered serious head injuries in a crash with a truck driver. He is recovering but faces a long road back.

A member of a touring indie band is still recovering from injuries he sustained last month while cycling in Dublin.

Joe Seaward, the drummer in the US indie band Glass Animals, was left with a fractured skull and brain injury after the incident on July 2nd.

He was in Dublin with his band at the time and was cycling on Usher’s Quay, in the south inner city, when he was involved in a crash with a truck driver.

Seaward sustained a broken leg, though his head injuries were of most concern. He became entangled with the truck’s trailer.

After being attended to at the scene by paramedics, he was taken to St James Hospital. The gardai are carrying out an inquiry into the crash.

His band released a statement saying he had undergone neurosurgery several times and was lucky to be alive.

“The neurosurgery consisted of reshaping part of his skull that had collapsed and been compressed into the brain by the weight of the truck’s trailer,” the band said.

“The operation was successful, but the collapsed skull had bruised and damaged the area of the brain responsible for speech.

“Initially Joe was only able to get out one word… ‘I’… But each day, he is finding more.”

However, in the weeks that have followed Seaward has continued to recover. He is, for example, walking again.

The band issued further social media posts, saying Seaward wanted to share his experience, including photos.

“Joe wanted me to let everyone know he’s doing good and said to stick up these photos,” the band said.

“He is recovering very well. Able to talk better and better each day. He has been blown away by the support and kindness that everyone has shown, and is incredibly grateful.

“Thank you all for being there for my boy. You have healing powers.”

“Our little chicken is standing! Slightly wonky… but not for long. Speech is coming back fast now too.”

Dublin Cycling Campaign has now said a cycling fundraiser was taking place today, Saturday, in Denver, Colorado.

It added Glass Animals were due to play at the event but Seaward’s injuries have prevented that.

The event’s organisers are now fundraising not only for the Bicycle Colorado group but also for the Dublin Cycling Campaign.

If you would like to donate – to improving cycling conditions in both cities – you can find all the details by following this link.

We wish Joe Seaward well with his recovery and further success with Glass Animals when he’s fully back on his feet.
