The Irish cycling season was deliberately delayed by two weeks in a bid to avoid bad weather. But now the new later opening weekend has been hit very badly by snow.
Irish cycling season start wiped out due to snow
Phoenix CC has confirmed its Phoenix GP is cancelled. The event is the latest road race set for the opening weekend of the Irish cycling season to be called off due to snowy weather.
It means of the six races - three for Saturday and three for Sunday - scheduled for this weekend, only the Lacey Cup is still on track to proceed; on Sunday.
Ironically, Cycling Ireland had this year delayed the start of the Irish cycling season to avoid bad weather in February.
The season had started in mid February in recent years. But a new rule introduced in the off season effectively banned open racing until the first weekend in March.

Newcastle West Knights has confirmed the Darach McCarthy & Co Solicitors Perpetual Shield and supporting races, which had been set for Saturday, are off.

Dublin Wheelers has also called of the Mick Lally Memorial, which was set for Co Meath on Saturday. And Banbridge CC has also cancelled the Annaclone GP; also previously set for Saturday.
For Sunday; Navan Road Club has confirmed its Cycleways Cup promotion is off.
However, Tralee BC has said the Lacey Cup will go ahead. The course in Kerry will be clear to race, the club says.
And now the Phoenix GP promoted by Belfast club Phoenix CC, set for Sunday, is also off. It confirmed the news in a statement this evening.
"Phoenix GP 2018 is cancelled, we apologise for any inconvenience this has caused," the club statement said.
"But we must consider the health and safety of all the riders who entered. The race committee would like to thank all the volunteers who had agreed to give up their time to run our event."
