Ireland’s premier women’s race Rás na mBan has been postponed, but the organisers are still planning to run the race this year.

While racing has
been suspended since early March because the international event Rás na mBan is
not held until September each year it was hoped it would be unaffected.

The organisers continued
to plan to hold the race in the usual dates of September 2nd to 6th
and based in Kilkenny.

However, they
have now said because of the continued uncertainty caused by the Covid19
pandemic, and resulting public health crisis, the race will not go ahead on its
planned dates.

That postponement
does not meant the event is off for this year. Indeed, the organisers have
clearly said today they still hoped to hold the race in 2020.

Announcing the
delay, race director Valerie Considine paid tribute to the volunteers, sponsors
and event stakeholders who had continued to support the event “in these
challenging times”.

“We remain
committed to running a race in 2020 but unfortunately the current landscape
prevents us from running the race as planned in early September,” she said.

“We need to give
everyone involved at least six weeks to properly prepare for the event and I’d
like to thank our riders, teams, volunteers and sponsors for their continued
patience and support in these challenging times.

“Rás na mBan exists as an international outlet for Irish riders and an opportunity for visiting riders to sample the hospitality and beauty of Irish cycling so we will wait a little longer to see if circumstances change and we can run an event.”

Considine was clear the event committee remain focused on running a race in 2020, if circumstances allowed.

“We’ll continue to review the situation and will be in a position to make further announcements in August,” she said.
