This piece is now updated with more cancellations:

Dublin Wheelers CC has decided to call off the Mick Lally Memorial in Co Meath this weekend.

The races were due to take place on Saturday. They would have been the first races of the new season.

However, very heavy snow has been falling in the area for the last 24 hours.

The snow is expected to continue for at least the next 24 hours. And temperatures are also expected to be below freezing.

As a result, the club has taken the decision to cancel the races. It confirmed the news in a statement.

“The Dublin Wheelers open cycle races due to take place in Summerhill on Saturday morning are cancelled,” it said.

“After reviewing weather forecasts, we formed the opinion that it is very unlikely that roads will be safe for racing on Saturday.

“We have made the decision now (Wednesday afternoon) rather than later, so that volunteers, riders, officials and public/voluntary services can make alternative arrangements for the extreme weather which is likely to endure over the next few days.”

The club said the services it needed to inform early included the Gardaí, Civil Defence and the local council, among others.

“As always, we are very grateful for the marvelous support we received from individuals and organisations - both public and voluntary,” the Dublin Wheelers statement added.

“Like you, we are disappointed that the event is not going ahead. We look forward to promoting the event and getting your support in the future.”

A4 riders have signed on, and paid, for their race online in advance. The club will work with Cycling Ireland to make refunds next week.

Riders who have paid their entry fee and are due a refund should monitor this link for more information.

The Travers Engineering Annaclone GP is also being hosted by Banbridge CC on Saturday.

And the Darach McCarthy & Co Solicitors and Michael Shiels road races are being hosted by Newcastle West Knights Cycling Club on the same day.

We'll have updates on those in the next 24 to 48 hours.
