Cycling Leinster has announced the selection of six junior riders to take on two UCI-ranked one-day races in Europe. The trip, to Luxembourg, is a real boost for the riders involved and comes at a time when the provincial body has also secured an invite to the Junior Tour of Wales later in the season.
It means the top juniors in Leinster will get a shot at going toe-to-toe with leading riders from Great Britain and Continental Europe in three excellent development opportunities where the experience gained will be invaluable.
And given the standard in the Irish junior group at present, the six riders selected for the races in Luxembourg next month, just before the Junior Tour of Ireland, will go abroad with a real proposition of animating the racing and taking results.
Cycling Leinster announced the six-man selection for GP Luxembourg and GP General Patton, on June 29th and 30th, saying they were very pleased to have gained invites to two races that were "iconic to the European racing scene for juniors"
"Going to these races along with the Junior Tour of Wales is what we have identified we need to offer our junior riders," it added. "International competition will set them up for the next level with Cycling Ireland, and funding allowed we will continue to search invites to other races for next season and beyond."
The team is compromised of a great mix of riders who have already sampled international racing, and been selected for Ireland, alongside other very strong prospects about to take those steps.
Joseph Mullen (Zappi Racing) and Josh Callaly (Lucan CRC), who are already in the national team shake-up, are joined by Orwell Wheelers Patrick O'Sullivan and David Harrington.
Matthew Walls (Lucan CRC) and Luca Holmes (Spellman Dublin Port), who have impressed this season as they have continued to emerge, complete a strong team for both events in Luxembourg.
The Leinster selection for the Junior Tour of Wales, which takes place a month after the Junior Tour of Ireland, will be announced at a later date.
The team for Luxembourg will be managed by Stephen O'Shea backed up by Gen Sheridan and Leinster chairman Brian Hayden.
