Cycling Ireland has issued a warning about a fake Facebook account that it says was initially established under the name of one of its members.
According to the federation, the person who established the account under the alias has made “false statements” about members of the BMX community.
“Cycling Ireland would like to make you aware of a Facebook imposter account that was set up under the profile name of a well known member of the BMX community,” a note on Cycling Ireland’s BMX Commission Facebook page reads.
“On this account the imposter has made false statements about people within the BMX community and in particular our branch in Lucan, Dublin.
“This imposter has targeted young members of our community and there has been unsuitable content available on these pages."
It added while the page was no longer operational it believed another imposter page was in use.
It urged its members to exercise caution when interacting with any Facebook user with apparent Cycling Ireland links.
“Should you see such an account or if you receive a friend request connected with Cycling Ireland which you are concerned about please do not accept their friend request.
“We would also ask you to bring such information to our attention immediately where the appropriate action will be taken”.
