Cycling Ireland is urging cyclists to ride alone this weekend if they are going out on the bike

Cycling Ireland has urged cyclists planning to go out on the bike this weekend to ride responsibly and avoid going cycling in groups.

It issued a brief message on social media, with a photo
of a cyclist riding alone, urging cyclists to think of front line medical staff
this weekend.

“If you're out training this weekend please ride
responsibly and be mindful of social distancing guidelines. Please cycle
individually and avoid groups,” Cycling Ireland said.

“Many of our members are working on the front line as
medical staff. Let's support their work and act responsibly.”

The reminder comes days after the national governing body urged cyclists not to train in groups and as cycling bans have been introduced in parts of Continental Europe.

Cycling Ireland’s latest statement comes a week after it told its affiliated clubs to cancel all club training rides and club events until and including 29th March.

“Members are encouraged to cycle individually and not in groups.  Members Cycling Ireland insurance is not altered,” it said.

Cycling Ireland
added clubs and club members should take precautions against the spread
of COVID-19 such as:

  • Regular hand washing
  • Be aware of social distancing
  • Exercising proper cough and sneeze etiquette

Races and sportives have been cancelled nationwide, on both sides of the border, up to and including March 29th, though that date may be extended.
