Cycling Ireland has this evening bowed to intense pressure to hold an EGM on Pat McQuaid's nomination to contest the UCI presidential election later in the year.
Stickybottle had earlier indicated on Facebook that if Cycling Ireland did not use its board meeting tonight to reverse its nomination of McQuaid from two weeks ago, we would launch a campaign to get the necessary club support to force an EGM on the federation.
We indicated we had been working on the issue for much of the past two weeks and believed we already had a lot of support from clubs.
As well as that pledge, other media outlets have put pressure on the board to call an EGM and a number of clubs made it known to the federation that they believed an EGM should take place.
Last night we revealed that former board member Anto Moran believed the board meeting held two weeks ago - where McQuaid was granted the nomination to contest the UCI election - was legally compromised because the meeting had not been held in strict accordance with the rules of the federation.
While tonight’s meeting was planned for a number of weeks and had not been specifically reconvened to discuss Pat McQuaid or vote again, the issue of McQuaid arose and it has now been decided to call an EGM.
A statement issued by Cycling Ireland tonight reads:
Cycling Ireland at a meeting of its Board on April 26th decided to convene an EGM to consider matters which have arisen following the decision taken at its Board meeting on April 12th, to nominate Mr Pat McQuaid to stand for the position of UCI President.
Details of the EGM will be circulated to all clubs early next week.
For and on behalf of the Board of Cycling Ireland,
Geoff Liffey,
Company Secretary.
26th of April 2013
It has emerged that at the board meeting this evening, the meeting held two weeks ago that nominated Pat McQuaid was deemed to be void because the rules around how such meetings should be convened were not strictly followed. That meant the nomination of two weeks ago was ruled to be void and so fell.
The board this evening felt that given the level of debate over the past two weeks, there appeared to be a much greater appetite for an EGM at this time than two weeks ago. Because of that, a decision was taken to put the matter to an EGM.
In summary, Pat McQuaid has no nomination as things stand and the EGM now planned will be asked to decide if Cycling Ireland should grant him the nomination.
Here’s the piece we did last night reporting on the concerns that had been raised about the last meeting and setting out some of the options open in light of those concerns: http://www.stickybottle.com/latest-news/former-cycling-ireland-board-member-questions-legality-of-pat-mcquaid-nomination/
The following is the post on Facebook from stickybottle earlier this evening, timed for the period when the board members would be just about convening for their meeting; you will also see the comments here:
