Cycling Ireland has issued a statement confirming that its events – including races and sportives – are suspended until after May 5th, in line with the Irish Government’s Covid19 measures.
The UCI said earlier today that it was extending to July and August the period of its sanctioned events being suspended. But the break in Irish action will depend on the Irish Government's advice, rather than when the UCI decides its racing can resume.
The UCI world governing body had already stated that no racing would take place until after June 1st at the earliest. Today it extended that period to July 1st. Furthermore, for WorldTour races the suspension is now set to last until August 1st.
However, there are no UCI-graded road races in Ireland apart from the National Road Championships.
It means despite the UCI’s statement today the Irish
suspension of races and sportives is to May 5th, which is when the current
round of public health measures put in place by the Irish Government is set to
expire.
The Irish Government is likely to keep many Covid19
measures in place long after May 5th. But some relaxation of the restrictions
currently in place is expected once that May 5th deadline is reached.
Whether any relaxation of those measures in Ireland after May 5th would enable some cycling events to resume remains to be seen.
For now, however, Cycling Ireland has said the suspension
of races and sportives – and other activities – in Ireland is to May 5th.
To incorporate the UCI’s latest decisions about its graded events around the world, Cycling Ireland has said the National Road Championships that had been planned for late June must be postponed to late August.
This is the case for all nations that usually hold their
national road championships the weekend before the Tour de France starts.
Furthermore, a number of other national championships
that had been due to take place in Ireland in April and May are now impacted,
as the Cycling Ireland statement explained.
“In line with the latest Government advice, Cycling
Ireland approved events and activities will be postponed up to and including May 5th,” the Irish federation said in its
statement today, Wednesday.
“Members
of the cycling community are asked to continue to comply with guidelines on
physical exercise within their locality.”
It added the
announcement impacted the Paracycling national track and road championships
that were due to he raced on April 25th and 26th.
“In
addition, the Cycling Ireland Junior Track National Championships scheduled for
May 9th and the Road and Time Trial National Championships due to take place between June 18th and 21st
are to be postponed,” the Irish governing body added.
“The UCI
today announced the rescheduling of the Road National Championships, organised by national federations, with a provisional date set for August 22nd-23rd.
“The
hosting of National Championship events will be subject to guidelines set out
by government and the easing of restrictions currently in place.”
Cycling Ireland concluded by saying it remains in close contact with the relevant authorities and a revised events calendar would be published at the earliest opportunity.
