Cycling Ireland shortlists for volunteer, coach, club and events of 2019

Cycling Ireland annual awards
Whose names, clubs and events will be on the Cycling Ireland trophies this year?

There's a whole host of awards up for grabs at the Cycling Ireland annual awards night and the shortlists are below.

Volunteer of the Year


Brian Hayden - St Tiernan's Cycling Club

Brian was nominated as he was the
main organiser for the Laragh Classic event which is part of the National Road
Series. The event finishes at the top of the Wicklow Gap making it one of the
more difficult events on the calendar.

Cathal Dillane - Galway Bay Cycling Club

Cathal was nominated as he was the
event promoter for the Galway Classic event. This was the first holding of the
event and received excellent feedback from participants due to the unique
format. Around 25kms of the 120km road race were on a mix of surfaces including
gravel and dirt tracks.

Chris McElhinney - Foyle Cycling Club

Chris was the race director for the
National Road Championships in Derry, where he, along with the other organisers
and volunteers, delivered a top-notch event. The event provided three days of
highly competitive racing on the city centre based road racecourse.

Dany Blondeel - Ards Cycling Club

Dany was selected for his ongoing
coverage and support of the sport, particularly youth cycling. He runs the
Belgian Project which aims to give young Irish cycling talent the chance to
race in Belgium. It also has a team of photographers who report on races
through photographs, videos and interviews.

Joan Curtin - Kanturk Cycling Club

Joan has been selected for his work in organising another successful Kanturk Three Day event during May.

Nicola McKiverigan - Powerhouse Sport

Nicola has been selected due to her
ongoing involvement in coaching and being part of various commissions of
Cycling Ireland. She coaches across different disciplines such as track and off
road devoting a lot of time to helping others improve.

Toby Watson - VC Glendale

Toby was nominated for the first award of the year due to his photography at a large number of local racing events. He gives up a large amount of his spare time to cover events on a voluntary basis and provides valuable coverage of the sport. Toby was also recently recognised by Cycling Ulster as their volunteer of the year for 2018.


Cycling Club of the Year


Banbridge Cycling Club

Banbridge CC were selected for the
April monthly award due to their work promoting events along with supporting
participation programmes such as "Women on Wheels" which has been
developed by Cycling Ulster. The club is celebrating their 75th anniversary
this year and have developed many top-level riders including Mark Downey who
this year won a bronze medal at UCI Track Cycling World Championships.

Bray Wheelers

The club were nominated for their
successful "Couch to 50k" programme which ran over six weeks during
February and March, organised by the club’s Women’s Development Officer. The
programme was designed for newcomers to the club to get into cycling and lead a
more active lifestyle, improve their fitness and to meet new friends and become
a part of the club.

Foyle Cycling Club

Foyle Cycling Club were selected for
the June monthly award due to their successful hosting of the National Road
Championships. The event which was held over the 27th - 30th June was highly
commended by competitors and spectator, providing three days of highly
competitive racing.

Galway Bay Cycling Club

The club had a busy month during
July hosting two high profile events. First up on the 11th of July the club
hosted the 2019 Cycling Ireland National Criterium Championships at Pallas
Karting Track. Later in the month the club hosted the first ever Galway Classic
event. The club relied on over 100 volunteers to run these events along with
support from other local clubs.

Lakeside Wheelers Mullingar Cycling Club

The club hosted one of the most
important events of the year - The Youth National Road Cycling Championships.
This is a huge event with youth riders travelling from all over the country for
the event which is held over two days. The event received excellent feedback from
participants and clubs.

Lisburn BMX Club

Lisburn BMX were selected due to
their work promoting BMX in their local area. This includes offering youth
cyclists the chance to experience the sport and offering demonstrations for
those interested in joining.

Omagh Wheelers

The club were nominated for this award for their successful staging of events during the year, particularly the McCann Cup which the club promoted during March. This followed on from numerous other events that the club organise including a cyclocross event during January. This year also saw the club hosting the 10th edition of the Tour of Omagh.


Best Leisure Event 2019


3 Peaks Cycle Club Charity Sportive – 3 Peaks Cycle Club

This sportive had 2 routes, the
UNIMONTIUM – 30 mile fairly flat with a few wee rolling hills to keep things
spiced up and the TRIMONTIUM – a nice 60 mile route incorporating the 3 Peaks
with a few good climbs to get the heartbeats up and the legs digging in! The
event was run to support the Aisling Centre and Air Ambulance NI.

Cliffs of Moher Cycling Challenge – Riverside CC

The event was run for the sixth time
this year with the event starting and finishing in the Clare town of
Ennistymon. There were three routes to cater for all levels with 40km, 80km and
125km options available. Over the years the event has raised almost €20,000 for
local charities and received a large amount of positive feedback for the event
this year from participants.

Leinster Loop – Acorn Road Club

The event was run over 2 days with a
family 12km and a 25km cycle on day 1 followed by three routes of 145km, 100km
and 55km on day 2. The new routes offered a fresh experience for new and
returning cyclists as they pedalled to raise funds for Breast Cancer Research
and St. Laurence’s Community Complex.

Pat Colgan Pedal the Peaks Challenge – Tullamore CTC

This event featured two “peaky”
routes of 95km and 125km with 828m and 1444m of climbing. 2 more routes of 50km
and 85km were available on relatively flat terrain, so something for everyone.
The event was run in support of the Irish Kidney Association and Down Syndrome
Offaly.

Reservoir Dog Sportive – Reservoir Cogs

The 5th edition of this event was
run over 2 challenging routes of 65km “The Pup” and 125km “The Dog” taking in
some popular climbs around County Wicklow. This year’s beneficiaries were
Blessington Tidy Towns and Blessington and District Forum.

SRAC Atlantic Challenge - SRAC

The event was based in Tralee this
year with around 3,000 participants and offered two routes around the iconic
Dingle Peninsula, a 100km route and a 135km route. It was an opportunity to
cycle the most scenic routes along the Wild Atlantic Way to Dingle, over the
famous Conor Pass and Slea Head.

Western Lakes Ladies Sportive – Western Lakes CC

The annual Ladies Sportive was on a 65km lap of Lough Mask. This year's event was in memory of Rachel McDarby and raised an amazing €10,000 for Diabetes Ireland.


Best Competitive Event of Year


Dublin Track International – Cycling Ireland Track Commission

The amount of preparation and
organisation that goes into it and on a small budget with no advertising on
social, TV or radio platforms

Galway Bay Classic – Galway Bay CC

An innovative event that brought
Paris Roubaix style racing to Ireland. It was extremely well organised.

Kanturk Three day – O’Leary Stone Kanturk CC

It was well run and comprised road
race, time trial and criterium which gave all riders a chance to shine.

Kerry Group Rás Mumhan – Killorglin CC

Rás Mumhan stepped seamlessly into
the breach as the premier road race on the calendar. It was very professional
as always, providing a fantastic experience for all involved.

Lisburn Open BMX Holeshot and Race Event – Lisburn BMX Club

Lisburn are the first club to offer
a Holeshot and race type event on the same weekend. The event attracted riders
from Scotland and England due to the cash prizes on offer to the Elite rider
groups.

Mondraker Grassroots Enduro Sligo Rd5 – Rebel MTB

Well organised, great trails and a
completely new venue away from the usual areas

National Masters and A3 Championships – Gorey CC

Gorey CC deserve this for running a
great race. It was a hard-competitive course. Very well run.

National Road Championships - Foyle CC

This event was delivered at an
extremely high standard, raising the bar for National Championships in years to
come. The event was very professional and put the Nationals on the level they
should always be. This was an extremely well organised event that brought a
professional style nature to the Nationals. City Centre racing action for all
categories, TV coverage and huge crowds made this event extra special and the
event of the year.

Women's Tour of Omagh – Omagh Wheelers CC

Accessible Stage Racing for W2 & W3 Riders, and for using the Women's Commissions Rider Rankings to successfully grade riders for Handicapping.


Best Club Coach 2019


Alan Concannon – Belmullet CC

Alan has promoted cycling tirelessly
in both Belmullet and in Co. Mayo at large over the last number of years.

Brendan Whelan – Arcane CC

For his work in Coaching the Women's
Cycling Ireland Teams on both Road & Track, his success with a development
team in the Tour of Omagh, and for bringing a Women's Commission Team back to
Irish women's premier race event 'Rás na mBan'.

Colm Watson – VC Glendale

Colm has done great work with VC
Glendale for many years and is the driving force behind the clubs
"Imps" project which has been very successful at getting youngsters
riding their bikes, so much so other clubs have seen and followed his example.

Dan Curtin – O’Leary Stone Kanturk CC

Dan continued his hard work with the
Cycling Munster youth academy, was well represented on national teams at all
levels and continued carrying the Munster academy abroad racing. The fruits of
his hard work were obvious at this year’s Senior National Championships, where
1st and 2nd in the senior RR, 1st U23 RR and 1st and 2nd in the junior RR were
all coached by Dan as young cyclists.

Dara Mc Kenna – Emyvale CC

He does a lot for youth cycling for
his club in promoting youth cycling, coaching and helping take youth riders to
events.

David McLoughlin and Stephen Ryan – Scott Orwell Wheelers CC

Puts a lot of time and effort in
running Corkagh Park for kids every Monday

Eugene Jackson – Ratoath BMX

Level 2 Coach Eugene Jackson works
tirelessly to bring a high level of BMX coaching at club level and beyond.

Hugh Byrne – Sundrive Track Team

His tireless organisation of
coaching sessions and competitions putting his own love of the sport behind
making others have their moment. While not even getting to ride his own
National Track Master category

Mark Moroney – Foyle CC

Mark runs a whole Sprocket Rocket program, helped organise the Women on Wheels program and also coaches a group of women for the couch to 50 km for a women’s only cycle.
