Having lined up several sponsors for the return edition of Rás Tailteann, the race organising committee has also secured financial backing from Cycling Ireland. Meanwhile, Irish cycling apparel company Spin11.com has also been named as one of the backers of the Rás this year.
Cycling Ireland’s chief executive, Matt McKerrow, said the national federation was “delighted” to see the Rás back on the racing calendar after a break since 2018.
“We are pleased to be in a position to support the event to get back on the road this year and see the legacy of this longstanding race, which dates back to 1953, continue,” he said. “We hope our significant funding of the event this year provides the impetus for future editions to follow.
“The organising committee have put an enormous amount of work into the event and with the support of the event sponsors, local councils and the wider cycling community it is sure to be a great success. We look forward to five days of spectacular racing, featuring our top domestic talent as well as teams from around the world.”
Rás director Ger Campbell said Cycling Ireland had been the one of the race’s “most consistent supporters over the years” and it’s backing of the 2022 edition was “vital”.
“Our sincerest thanks in particular go the to the board of Cycling Ireland which has since 2019 encouraged and supported the efforts we have made to bring this event back,” he said. “We especially would like to thank the board for its support and foresight through the highly uncertain times during the Covid pandemic.
“(We are thankful) for their recognition of how critical this event is, not just for the development of our talented athletes, but also for the role this event plays bringing the Irish cycling community together."
Spin 11, the cycling apparel company, has also come on board to supply the classification leaders’ jerseys and sponsor the young rider classification on the race.
Maria Connaughton of Spin11 said her company was very pleased to continue its long association with the race and Irish cycling generally, which it has sponsored in many ways since the company was founded.
“It was never something that we gave a second thought to back in 2019 when we were made aware of the efforts to put this iconic event back on the road. We were, and still are, only too happy to continue our long association with An Rás Tailteann," she said.
"We look forward to seeing the champions of today wearing our jerseys as they continue in their pursuit of becoming the legends of tomorrow. We’re also very excited to have our own Spin11 Chain Reaction team entering the Rás this year.”
