Cycling Ireland reveals shortlist of best riders, clubs and officials for 2011

 

Cycling Ireland has announced the nominees for its Members Awards for 2011. All licence holders are eligible to vote for their favourite nominee.

The categories include best male and female Ireland-based riders of the year. There are also awards for best club of the year and best volunteer of the year.

Below we've included the full list of nominees in all categories.

The association's 2011 Awards Dinner takes place in Dublin's Radisson Blu Hotel on Saturday, November 12th.

Best Volunteer

  • Pat Whitney - ran the greatest number of Sprocket Rocket skills courses for kids in Ireland
  • Gary McIlroy - sat on both Road Commission and College of Commissaires, Race organiser, and outgoing grading officer
  • Gerry Beggs - mechanic for the Paralympic Squad, and crucial member on the team
  • Stephen Gibbons - introduced many people to the Sundrive track, actively participates in recruitment
  • Aideen Collard - organises spins and events aimed at women who are new to cycling
  • Tommy Lamb - integral part of Cycling Ulster, helps promote and support cycling in Ulster
  • Sean Herlihy - involved with supporting and developing mountain biking in Ireland
  • Ger Campbell - involved with developing the youth side of cycling
  • Colm Rigley - involved with developing the youth side of cycling
  • Dan Curtin - sat on both the Road and Youth Commission and set up a track in Cork
  • John Brennan - sat on both Connacht Commission and Road Commission, develops cycling in Connacht
  • Dany Blondeel - runs the Belgian Project, assisting young riders make a jump to international level

 

Best Club

  • Cycle4Sick Children - have trained most leaders in Sprocket Rocket, adopt all inclusive policy in the club, and fundraise for good causes
  • Orwell Wheelers - Ireland's biggest club, all round activity from racing to leisure, youth to veterans
  • Dromara CC - develop cycling in the area, promoting youth events in particular
  • Innisfree Wheelers - promote all areas of cycling, adopting an all inclusive policy
  • Usher IRC - provide a key team of race organisers who assist with many of the main events around Ireland
  • Blarney CC - one of the older clubs, with a resurgence in membership, this year promoted many events
  • Stevens Cyclelogical - new club in 2011 and produced some top results during the year
  • Ballymoney CC - Cycling Ulster club of the year, put a lot of focus on reaching out to the community.
