Cycling Ireland has resolved the insurance issue that had seen cyclocross racing cancelled in Cork and also resulted in a BMX facility in the city effectively being mothballed.
There was concern that road racing would be similarly
effected when the new season got underway.
However, that scenario appears to have been averted, with
Cycling Ireland now saying it had reached an agreement with Cork City Council.
The national governing body said its insurance brokers,
O’Driscoll O’Neill, had clarified matters with Cork City Council’s insurance
brokers.
They had agreed in principle with them on the necessary
steps to enable Cork BMX Club use the local BMX track and allow other cycling
events take place in Tramore Valley Park.
Cyclocross racing set for the park had to be cancelled
last month because the council was not satisfied with the level of insurance
cover in place.
Cycling Ireland CEO Mat McKerrow said today the
federation was very pleased the issue had been resolved.
“A clear path is now in place for usage of the facilities
in Tramore Valley Park – for the benefit of Cycling Ireland members and clubs,”
he said.
“We’ve some resulting paperwork to do, but will get this
actioned swiftly so the interruptions to the clubs and events can be lifted.
“I’d also like to thank the members, clubs and volunteers
for their patience through what has been a frustrating time – and we look
forward to renewed activity in the park.”
Stephen McClew from Cork BMX stated: "I’m relieved
that the insurance issue has been ironed out and thrilled at the prospect of
getting Cork BMX Club back onto the track.”
The cyclocross racing cancelled last month was being
organised by De Ronde van Cork, which was bitterly disappointed at the turn of
events.
Privately, a number of cycling officials from around the
country told stickybottle there was significant concern that road racing in the
Cork City Council area would also be cancelled.
Cork City Council had insisted last month that a special
form of insurance cover be put in place to protect it from an insurance claim
in the event that one rider crashed into another during the planned cyclocross
race in Tramore Valley Park.
While De Ronde van Cork explained it was affiliated to
Cycling Ireland and was covered by the federation’s insurance, the council
insisted additional cover be put in place.
De Ronde van Cork said at the time it had tried more than
a dozen insurers and the cover that the city council was looking for does not
exist. As a result, its event was cancelled.
