Cycling Ireland sets out “Phase 1 cycling road map” as restrictions ease

There is little impact for cycling, in all its forms, in Phase 1 of the Covid19 easing of restrictions plan starting next Monday. But things are moving and racing is now anticipated, in some form, from July (Photos by Sean Rowe and Bryan Keane)

While cyclists can meet in groups of four from next Monday to go for a ride, they must stay two metres apart from each other and can only ride within 5km of home, Cycling Ireland has said.

The federation issued its advice as the Republic prepares to commence the first of five phases to August during which Covid19 lock-down restrictions will be gradually eased.

Phase 1 begins next Monday at which point cyclists will
be able to meet in groups of four, though the regulations they must adhere to
means a conventional group ride will still not be possible.

“Cycling has been identified as a priority sport and is listed in phase 1 of the roadmap for reopening society and business,” Cycling Ireland said in a statement on Friday as it issued its own roadmap for all forms of cycling under Phase 1 – that road map is included below.

With the restarting of racing at least being talked about again, there will be optimism in the cyclocross scene that the racing schedule will go ahead from the autumn. Nothing is set in stone but at least Ireland is now starting to take the first steps out of lock-down. Cycling Ireland
continued: “Research published last week found an additional 220,000
people are cycling on a weekly basis,
signaling the import role cycling will play in Ireland’s recovery.

“The
easing of restrictions during phase 1 allows for a limited return of certain
cycling activities. Groups of up to
four people may cycle within a 5km radius of their home while
maintaining social distancing requirements.

“Members
are encouraged to carefully assess their route and the potential risks to establish whether four people
cycling a minimum of two metres apart constitutes a hazard and is safe
within your locality.

“If
cycling in an off-road environment, please be aware that many car parks remain
closed, therefore you are asked to start and finish from your own home to avoid
parking issues, and to remain within
the prescribed radius (in the Republic of Ireland) in each phase.

“Above
all, members must take personal responsibility for their health and safety when
deciding to train with others,” Cycling
Ireland said, adding it was consulting with the Government, Sport Ireland and
other agencies about when club training sessions and events may return.

“It is
envisaged that competitive events are
likely to return in Phase 4, provided social distancing guidelines can
be complied with. We intend to share further guidelines directly with clubs and
event organisers in the coming weeks.”

However, it is not yet clear what those competitive events might be and what the social distancing guidelines will be when Phase 4 starts in late July.
