Cycling Ireland outlines details of Pat McQuaid EGM and wording of motion of support

Cycling Ireland has revealed details of the EGM that has been called to decide whether the association should nominate UCI president Pat McQuaid for election to a third term in office.

The meeting will be held on June 15th at the Red Cow Moran Hotel in Dublin 22, just off the M50. Those present will be asked to vote for or against a motion of support for McQuaid's nomination.

The board of Cycling Ireland was forced to meet again last Friday after it emerged the meeting it had two weeks earlier at which McQuaid was nominated had not been convened properly. That meant McQuaid's nomination was void and such was the backlash against the original decision that the board members decided to put it to an EGM.

Stickybottle was one of a number of bodies, including clubs and media outlets, in the Irish cycling community to strongly urge the board to call an EGM and it appears the pressure from many quarters effectively brought about a u-turn. The decision to hold an EGM has been welcomed in that it puts the decision in the hands of the grassroots.

The timing of the EGM is perhaps a little later than some might have expected, coming as it does in six weeks from now. Candidates seeking election must have their nominations in place some 90 days before the election is held at the World Championships in late September. It means McQuaid would have very little time to put in place another nomination if he fails to secure the backing of the EGM.

Because he lives in Switzerland he could seek the support of the Swiss federation. It is possible McQuaid could approach the Swiss immediately and seek the nomination. If he were to secure that, he would not neeed the Irish nomination, though any such move would suggest he feels his home cycling community does not support him.

Cycling Ireland has released the details of the meeting and motion in a statement, which we have included below. We'll have more information on this later but wanted to bring you this information as quickly as possible.
