Jake Gray and Michael O'Loughlin (both in orange jerseys) are seen here in the breakaway on the final stage of the Youth Tour of Scotland. They are now a small group who will be able to call themselves youth Olympians.
Cycling Ireland has named two strong squads for the European Youth Olympics for the boys and girls events in Utrecht, Holland, in mid July.
Despite the young age of those named, the squad members have already gained considerable international experience riding in the UK and Continental Europe; mostly through racing and training trips arranged by the federation’s youth projects - FBD Talent Team 2020 and Neenan Travel Talent Team 2020.
The European Youth Olympics take place from July 14th to 19th. One of the biggest events that youth cyclists can ride, the Games involve a boys and girls 8km time trial and a road race for each.
Cycling Ireland is permitted to nominate up to three riders on each team and reserves.
The qualification process, which involved a number of races in Ireland, is now completed and Cycling Ireland intends to nominate the following riders for ratification by the Olympic Council of Ireland:
Girls Nominations
Emily Birchall
Josie McKnight
Ciara Doogan
Reserve 1) – Laura Cooke
Reserve 2) – Christine Russell
Boys Nominations
Declan Mulholland
Michael O’Loughlin
Jake Gray
Reserve 1) Adam Stenson
Reserve 2) Aaron Swan
All of the riders are very strong, but Emily Birchall put her stamp all over the Youth Tour of Scotland earlier this year, coming away with stages and overall honours. She will be the clear leader of the girls’ team. She will be supported by Josie McKnight and Ciara Doogan.
Similarly, Jake Gray won the boys Tour of Scotland and is selected for the races in Holland, while stage winner in Scotland Michael O’Loughlin is also picked. Declan Mulholland, who is a very strong emerging rider is also selected.
