Cycling Ireland names five-rider Irish national team for Junior Tour of Ireland

Huge Óg Mulhearne is one of the five riders selected by Cycling Ireland onto the Irish national team for the upcoming Junior Tour of Ireland

Cycling Ireland has named a very strong five-rider Irish team for the upcoming Junior Tour of Ireland, the country's iconic junior international stage race that unfolds this year from July 8th to 13th.

Curtis McKee (Spellman Dublin Port) is among the group, having taken a series of victory this year, since the start of the season. However, while McKee has been the most prolific of those selected, it is a strong group across the board.

“This is a strong and exciting group of riders who have shown great form and consistency throughout the season," said Michael Black, Cycling Ireland's high performance pathway lead.

"The Junior Tour of Ireland is a key development milestone, and we’re confident this team will represent the national jersey with pride and purpose. We’re committed to exposing our athletes to the highest levels of racing and this event is the perfect platform.”

Joining McKee on the team are: Hugh Óg Mulhearne (AS Villemur Cyclisme), Toby Sweetman (VC Glendale), Peter Quigley (Foyle CC) and Jack Woods (Crabbe Dstny).

Frankie Campbell, who has been sports director for many winning Irish teams down the years, will marshal the five-man national team this year and he said he was very much looking forward to the event.

“I'm delighted and honoured to be given the opportunity to manage and work with the team in our National Tour. The selection shows the strength in depth we currently have throughout the country, and I look forward to helping the riders show off their talents in the national jersey.”

Martyn Irvine, high performance pathway coach, said he was disappointed not to be at this year’s Junior Tour "due to a scheduling conflict" with another event.

"I’ve been working closely with Michael and Frank throughout the selection process and I’m very pleased with the team we’ve assembled," said Irvine, who most recently took charge of a national team at last month's Rás Tailteann.

"It’s a well-balanced and competitive squad, capable of performing across all terrain. I’m confident they’ll represent the national jersey with pride, and I look forward to seeing how they perform during the week.”
