After two years working on the high performance staff with Cycling Ireland - enjoying success with Irish teams - Michael Black is set to move on from his role with the national governing body (NGB) in the weeks ahead.

Black, who previously worked for Triathlon Ireland, has secured a new position with another NGB, and will leave Cycling Ireland after being appointed in 2023 and have secured a promotion in the two years since then.

From Co Donegal, he was head of development at Triathlon Ireland from 2013 to 2017, before working as its head coach to the end 2022 before joining Cycling Ireland exactly two years ago.

He began his tenure with Cycling Ireland as 'high performance pathway coach', progressing to the position of 'pathway lead'. Cycling Ireland said he had "made a strong impact developing the performance pathway programme and a new HP pathway strategy launched earlier this year".

Black's departure means Cycling Ireland is now in the market for a new high performance pathway lead to replace him. It should be an exciting position for the new candidate as Irish cycling is currently enjoying a moment, especially as the strength in depth across the categories, in both men's and women's racing, is impressive.

“We have benefited from a strong development in HP Pathway delivery under Michael’s guidance with a fresh strategy for 2025-28, a refocused performance pathway programme and strong stakeholder education," said Cycling Ireland high performance director, Iain Dyer.

"We are really keen to continue in this vein and can also look forward to the new national indoor velodrome in the next two years which will further help us develop our delivery to a growing number of HP pathway athletes.

"In our main HPU strategy, we’ve identified how critical the HP pathway is to meeting our future ambitions, so we’re excited to see how much we can develop the pathway in the coming years, and the new post holder will be a critical lead in that process. We’d like to wish Michael the very best of luck in his new role.”
