Cycling Ireland has named a 14-rider team for the European Track Championships which mixes youth and experience.
Lara Gillespie steps up to a new role as reserve in the
team pursuit line-up. And other young guns in the selection include Eimer
McMullan and Xeno Young.
While Young, a junior Europeans and Worlds medal winner
in the pursuit, is not new to Irish elite teams it is McMullen’s first national
squad.
The 22-year-old has been emerging strongly on the
domestic scene in recent years and this season at the nationals took team
sprint gold with Robyn Stewart.
They set a new national record time in that event, with
McMullan also claiming silver in the individual sprint and 500m TT and bronze
in the keirin.
Lydia Boylan and Lydia Gurley ride the madison; the
silver medal winners at the madison at the Europeans two years ago.
Mark Downey and Fintan Ryan are the men’s madison pairing
selected for these Europeans while Felix English rides the omnium and scratch
race.
McMullan and Stewart both compete in the keirin and
sprint while Boylan rides the omnium and Shannon McCurley goes in the scratch
race.
The team pursuit team is comprised of Mia Griffin, Orla
Walsh, Kelly Murphy and Alice Sharpe with Lara Gillespie as reserve.
Xeno Young rides the individual pursuit while the Irish berths in the points race and elimination race are yet to be decided.
