The Irish governing body has confirmed disc brakes are allowed in sportives as well as road races.
Cycling Ireland approves disc brakes for road racing
Cycling Ireland has approved the use of disc brakes in Irish road races. And the ruling also applies to Cycling Ireland sportives.
The move is effective immediately and follows a ruling by the UCI last month.
UCI has been running a trial in the pro peloton for almost three years and has now approved disc brakes for use in road and BMX racing.
Cycling Ireland said at the end of last year it was continuing to prohibit the use of discs pending the UCI trial concluding.
The only exception was that pro riders – from all three tiers of the pro game – would be permitted to ride on disc brakes while racing in the Republic.
Discs were banned in some countries in sportives affiliated to, or run by, the national governing body.
However, it was always unclear whether the disc brake ban in races also applied to Cycling Ireland-affiliated sportives.
But the Irish federation has now said the brakes were never banned in sportives.
At any rate, the key thing now is that discs are legal in both road race and sportives.
Cycling Ireland approving their use was a formality once the UCI confirmed it was making them permanently legal from July 1st.
The UCI announced the news in a statement at the end of last month.
“Following nearly three years of tests, and in agreement with various stakeholders – teams, riders, mechanics, fans, commissaires, and the bicycle industry via the World Federation of the Sporting Goods Industry (WFGSGI) — the decision has been taken to authorise disc brakes for road and BMX Racing, as of 1st July this year,” the statement said.
