Cycling Ireland said it would decide early tomorrow, Friday, if the first of two junior events planned for this weekend will go ahead amid extreme weather warnings from Met Éireann.
The national governing body was set to
hold two junior training and information days on Saturday and Sunday.
But it may cancel them if the storm
warnings are still in place 24 hours before each day-long event was due to
commence.
The events – for women on Saturday and
men on Sunday – were set to be held from 11am in Carrick-on-Suir.
Each
day was due to start with an endurance road ride,
followed by an information
session on the 2020 junior high performance programme.
They may still go ahead but the
federation has issued a brief statement warning riders in advance that a
decision, based on the weather, would be taken 24 hours of each event.
“If these weather warnings are still in
place 24 hours before the planned junior training and information days this weekend,
they will be cancelled,” it said of the Met Éireann warnings issued today,
Thursday.
“At 11am tomorrow (Friday) a decision on
Saturday’s junior women’s training day will be made. The decision regarding
Sunday’s junior men’s training day will be taken at 11am on Saturday.
“Anybody intending to travel is advised
to check the Cycling Ireland website and @CyclingIreland on Twitter
in advance.”
Storm Jorge is expected to bring
torrential rain and high winds to Ireland this weekend and is the third bad
storm in a month to prompt weather warnings.
A status Orange wind warning has
been issued Clare, Galway, Mayo, Kerry, Donegal, Leitrim and Sligo with gusts
of up to 130km per hour expected. The warning is valid from Saturday
until 3am on Sunday.
A Status yellow wind warning has
been issued for the rest of the country with gusts of up to 110km/h forecast,
with that warning valid until 3am on Sunday.
