Cycling Ireland is now offering a new type of membership, for those who commute, at a price of €35 or £30 per year. While the membership is now on sale, the national governing body has suggested it is a trial exercise, to see if there is the demand to keep it going on a long-term basis.
The national governing body said its new commuter membership "offers many of the same benefits as our other membership packages, including insurance cover and retail discounts with some of our partners".
In comparison to the €35 or £30 cost of the new commuter membership, a full competition licence costs €130 or £126 while a leisure membership is €50 or £50 per year. A limited competition licence is €90 or £90 annually.
However, a commuter licence will not enable a cyclist to take part in any events, including sportives, as it is limited to commuter activities only. Cycling Ireland has partnered with 'Cycle Friendly Employer' in launching the new licence.
'Cycling Friendly Employer' says it "works with employers, campuses and organisations to make their workplaces cycling friendly" and encourage employees to cycle to work. Companies can secure 'cycling friendly employer' status by creating a cycling friendly environment.
"We are delighted to be trialling the Cycle Friendly Employer commuter membership this year," said Cycling Ireland 'Get Ireland Cycling Officer' Paul Norton. "The membership comes with many of the benefits of our other membership packages and helps us support advocacy of cycling as a sustainable method of transport.
"It is great to see an influential employer like Analog Devices embrace cycling by engaging with the Cycling Ireland Commuter Membership and the Cycling Friendly Employer initiative, and the evidence of its benefits is clear when you see the numbers of their employees cycling to work increasing from 4 to 11 percent."
