Road races cancelled due to snow get new early season dates

Cycling Ireland

One of the new dates for the events called off last weekend means there will now be races three days in a row before the major stage races at the Easter Bank Holiday weekend. The Annaclone GP is now set for Monday, March 19th, when no races had been planned, according to the Cycling Ireland calendar. Above, Mark Dowling beats Matteo Cigala for the Annaclone GP last year (Photo: David McVeigh – The Belgium Project)

Cycling Ireland, clubs set new dates for cancelled races

The disappointment of cancelled races in the opening weekend of the season has been tempered with news two of the events are being run within weeks.

The Annaclone GP and the Darach McCarthy & Co Solicitors road races are set for later this month.

Both races were set to go ahead last Saturday. But the snowy conditions saw them cancelled.

However, Banbridge CC and Cycling Ireland have fixed the new date of March 19th – the Monday Bank Holiday after St Patrick’s Day – for the Annaclone GP.

And the Darach McCarthy races are set for Saturday, March 24th. They are promoted by Newcastle West Knights.

The promotion of the Annaclone GP on March 19th will be welcomed by many riders.

It is the only race in the Cycling Ireland calendar that day. It means some riders will now be able to race three days in a row to prepare for Easter if they wish.

Darach McCarthy & Co race organiser with Newcastle West Knights is Liam Collins. He told stickybottle he would likely lengthy his events on March 24th. That step is aimed at aiding riders preparing for Easter.

The fixture will involve its usual three separate races.  One will cater for A4 & M40 riders and another for women and M50s. The third event will be for A1, A2, A3 and juniors combined.

The Annaclone GP will feature two races; one for A1-A2-A3-Jnr riders and another for A4-Women.

Banbridge CC said some of those pre-entered may not able to ride on the new date. Refunds will be available by contacting [email protected].

Pre-entry for the rescheduled events opens today - Tuesday, March 6th – and closes at 9pm on Thursday.
