Getting to the Tokyo Olympics - and qualifying for them first - will be an expensive business. Sport Ireland is allocating extra money for many federations.
Cycling Ireland gets more cash towards Tokyo Olympics
Cycling Ireland has received an additional €40,000 in funding to help track cyclists in their quest for Olympic qualification.
The additional money was confirmed today by Sport Ireland. It also announced the extra money for fifteen other sports.
The sums announced today will be added to the funding that each federation already receives.
While the money for cycling will be welcomed, it is lower than the allocation to many other sports.
Sport Ireland said the funds for Cycling Ireland would be used: “To support the track cycling campaign to Tokyo 2020 and maximise the opportunities presented with the addition of new events to the Olympic programme.”
With the Madison event having been included in the Olympics, Ireland has an opportunity to qualify in both men’s and women’s events.
The riders, in what is a two-rider event, will need to travel all over the world to score qualification points.
Sport Ireland said the National Sports Policy was published recently and had highlighted the need for increased investment in high performance sport.
Extra funding, it said, was needed if Ireland was to reach its potential on the international stage. And the money announced today is aimed at boosting that potential.
Chief executive of Sport Ireland, John Treacy, added: “In early 2018, Sport Ireland identified an immediate need for investment in order to offset the high costs associated with qualifying and preparing for 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo and participation in other key World Championship events.
“We have worked closely with the National Governing Bodies to ensure that this funding will be targeted towards enhancing athlete and team performance.
“We look forward to seeing a return on this much needed investment in the years ahead.”
