Cycling Ireland appoints new interim chief executive as McKerrow leaves

Chris Kitchen, who led Triathlon Ireland through a period of significant growth, has been appointed new interim chief executive of Cycling Ireland

Chris Kitchen, who previously led Triathlon Ireland, has been appointed as the new interim chief executive at Cycling Ireland. He takes on the role after the departure of chief executive Matt McKerrow, who officially left his position today, Monday.

Cycling Ireland will be led by Kitchen in coming months while it is searching for a permanent replacement for McKerrow. The decision to appoint him as interim chief executive, a position he recently held at Table Tennis Ireland, was confirmed by Cycling Ireland this afternoon.

"A Yorkshire Irishman, Chris is no stranger to the Irish sports system, having been employed as Triathlon Ireland CEO for eight years from 2013-2020," Cycling Ireland said in a statement announcing the appointment.

"Prior to and concurrently with this post, he has a long history of involvement in non-executive roles in British Triathlon, the Europe Triathlon and the World Triathlon. He is an accredited mediator and has a solid business background.

"Chris will be based at Cycling Ireland HQ on the Sports Campus and will fulfil the CEO role whilst a thorough recruitment process for a permanent post-holder is undertaken. More details of this process will be published in due course."

Kitchen was chief executive of Triathlon Ireland for eight years, leaving that job in September 2020. During that period Triathlon Ireland's membership grew from 7,600 to almost 19,000. The number of sanctioned events in Ireland increased from 165 to 200 while the number of clubs increased from 67 to 100.
