Cycling Ireland has appointed Iain Dyer as its new high performance director following the departure of Brian Nugent almost 12 months ago.

Dyer, from Great Britain, spent 21 years at British Cycling as a senior coaching and management figure. He was involved in five Olympic Games, including the Tokyo Games last July, where Britain topped the track medals table.

His appointment, which was expected, is effective immediately. Cycling Ireland said in his new role Dyer would "take ownership of the operational delivery of the 'perform' elements of the 'strategic plan' for Cycling Ireland, which will see the establishment of sustainable structures and systems in preparation for the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games and beyond".

In his first role, as sprint coach, Dyer presided over the development of riders such as Sir Chris Hoy, Victoria Pendleton, and Jason Kenny. In more recent years as head coach and lead track coach, he was centrally involved in developing the vision and structure within British Cycling.

The move to appoint Dyer comes after Nicolas Roche was appointed manager of the senior Irish road team.

In other news, Cycling Ireland has also announced its chief finance officer, Frank Keenan, has left that job. The federation said he had announced “his retirement from the company due to ill health”. He had worked as chief finance officer and operations manager before that, spending 10 years with Cycling Ireland.

More to come.
