Brian Nugent has been named as Cycling Ireland’s new head coach and will fill the post overseeing rider coaching for the Olympic cycle to Rio 2016.
The move comes as the federation restructures its high performance coaching set-up for elite riders and paracyclists for the period to those Games just over three years away in Brazil. The federation has also recently invited applications for the post of development coach, with the successful candidate set to work under the Nugent.
No stranger to the Irish set-up, Nugent is in fact Cycling Ireland’s longest serving staff member and has been involved with its high performance and development coaching since 2006.
His previous role was national performance coach, where he specialised in paracycling for the last number of years.
Under his term, the Irish paracycling set-up has developed from a fledgling part of the sport in Ireland to become one of the best nations in the world. The current squad has won six World titles, two Paralympic titles, and multiple Paralympic and World Championship medals.
Speaking about the appointment, Cycling Ireland CEO Geoff Liffey said: “We are very pleased seeing Brian get further opportunities with Cycling Ireland and are excited to see how this progresses. We hope that Brian can replicate the success in London at the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio.”
While the process to appoint a development coach not yet complete, Cycling Ireland said it expects to make an announcement in that regard “in coming weeks”.
From all at stickybottle, the very best of luck to Brian and let’s hope he has the Midas touch with all riders who pull on the national jersey over the next few years.
