The season may be just over a couple of months old, but already a huge number of A2 riders have scored points in Cycling Ireland's rankings for the category. Above, Gareth McKee's win on the opening stage of the Tour of the North was a brilliant victory. But for now he must settle for 2nd place in the A2 rankings behind Barry Meade. For this year Meade was downgraded from A1 to A2 after an injury required surgery. However, a condition of being allowed downgrade was that he retained 14 points on his licence so he would move back up to A1 even with modest results. It means at this stage of the season, when no riders have scored a huge number of points, he tops the A2 rankings even though he has not raced this year. Those with zero points have either: (1) Been promoted from the lower ranks and have reverted to zero points on becoming A2s or (2) have simply failed to score any points yet this year.
