Conor Hennebry is the top ranked road racing cyclist in
the country two months into the domestic season.
The Dan Morrissey-MIG-Pactimo man won the overall
rankings by a big margin last year – almost 80 points – and is well on his way
already for 2019.
He leads the Cycling Ireland A1 ranks from one of the other men of the early season; Charlie Prendergast of Castlebar CC
Hennebry has collected 85 points so far this year, with Prendergast just
two points behind him. And in 3rd in the rankings comes Gareth O’Neill;
the Newry Wheelers rider enjoying his best form ever.
O’Neill has 76 points, followed by: Lindsay Watsons of Powerhouse Sport (74 points); Conor Murnane of UCD Cycling Club (60), Paul Kennedy of Foran CC (60), Sean Hahessy of Dan Morrissey-MIG-Pactimo (55) and Richard Maes of Strata 3-VeloRevolution (54).

In 9th place in the Cycling Ireland A1 rankings comes
Darnell Moore of Caldwell Cycles on 52 points followed by David Montgomery; the
unattached man on 48 points.
Rankings leader Hennebry may not have retained his Rás
Mumhan crown last weekend but he was still 4th overall and took 7th and 3rd on
stages.
He has won three times already this year; Rás Luimní,
North Tipp Open Race and Des Hanlon Memorial.
He has also been runner-up at the Dungarvan Open Race and the Donal Crowley Memorial in Blarney; his team mate Hahessy winning both of those.
Prendergast has also had a great start to the year. He won a stage and the overall at Rás Mhaigheo and was 5th and 2nd on stages there.
Charlie Prendergast also claimed victory in the Waller Cup in Bohermeen and has been 2nd in the Mick Lally Memorial, Rás Naomh Finian and the Castlebar GP.
However, despite
the string of results of the top two ranked riders; 3rd placed Gareth O’Neill
has been the revelation of the year so far.
Not exactly and
newcomer, and not even new to the A1 ranks, he has put together his better run
of form ever if late.
He claimed the
Carn Classic and was 3rd in Rás Naomh Finian, the Killinchy GP and the Lucan
GP. He went to within one second of yellow at the Tour of the North last
weekend, where he was 3rd on a stage and 6th overall.
In total 93 A1
riders have collected points so far this season.
