Cycling group urges riders not to train outside at all during crisis

winter training mistakes cyclists
The Movement for Credible Cycling has urged professionals and amateurs not to train outdoors during the Covid19 crisis now deepening across the world

The Movement for Credible Cycling has urged professional and amateur cyclists in regions impacted by the Covid19 crisis not to train outside.

While the group is effectively a union of cycling teams
and others working in pro cycling to campaign for drug-free cycling, it has
intervened in the debate around Covid19.

The group has urged professional cyclists and amateur or
leisure riders not to take to the open roads during the current public health
crisis.

Dr Pierre Lebreton, a hematologist working with the
Movement for Credible Cycling, warned all cyclists against training on the open
roads.

“If some of you wonder whether they can go out to train,
the answer is no,” he said in a statement addressed to the movement’s member
cyclists and amateur riders.

“Not going out is the answer to two potential issues:
contaminating the others, and having an accident that would overcrowd the
hospitals even more.”

The statement from the movement said in some parts of the
world governments had already asked people to limit their movements in a bid to
slow down the spread of the virus.

It added this should apply to everyone, including
cyclists – “whether you are a mere amateur cyclist or a cycling champion” – who
would ordinarily train on the open roads.

“Before anything else, cyclists are global citizens,” it
said. “Solidarity is a crucial value that sport must encourage, especially in
these circumstances.

“We sincerely hope that our individual behaviours and our
collective will are key to defeat this pandemic.”
