Cycling community left reeling at sudden death of true gent

Always in good form and a keen racing cyclist and organiser of events, Gerry had raced right up to the time of his sudden death yesterday.

 

The Irish racing community is in mourning today at the passing of Louth rider Gerry McCabe of Cuchulainn CC.

Gerry, who was from a very well known cycling family, was an extremely popular rider who was active in racing himself and organising events right up to the time of his sad death.

News of his sudden passing emerged late last night, with Gerry having ridden the cyclocross race in Navan only last weekend.

There has been an outpouring of sadness and shock on social media as those closest to him and the huge numbers of people around the country who knew Gerry struggled to digest the news of his death.

Gerry was an avid mountain biker and cyclocross rider and along with his two brothers organised Da Cooley Thriller MTB marathon event.

He was also a very keen road rider and was racing on the road in the Cuchulainn CC colours this year. He has also competed in triathlon, though cycling was his life's passion.

Cycling Ireland led tributes to Gerry last night with a brief statement, saying everyone had been saddened to hear the news of his passing.

“We are very sad to learn of the passing of Gerry McCabe from Cuchulainn Cycling Club,” the federation said.

“Gerry was not only an incredibly talented mountain biker but is also one of the infamous three McCabe brothers who host of one of the longest running MTB marathon events, Da Cooley Thriller. RIP Gerry.”

Gerry’s sudden death comes just weeks after MTB legend Richie Byrne lost his battle with cancer.

The Irish Mountain Bike Racing Club described Gerry as a legend.

“We have just heard the sad news of the sudden passing of legendary Cuchulainn CC rider Gerry McCabe,” it said.

“Along with his brothers Declan and Johnny, he was a major part of the mountain biking scene in Louth and a regular feature at races around the country.

“He was such a gentleman and he will be sadly missed. We would like to offer our condolences to Gerry’s family, friends and club mates. RIP ride free.”
