One of the most popular parts of Leinster for both road cyclists and their off-road cousins, the Blessington lakes are the location of a new legal battle.

Wicklow County Council wants to install a cycling and walking track around the lakes. But a local resident and sailing club have objected.

Local man Brian Kingham and Blessington Sailing Club have taken a High Court challenge to the plans.

They argue the council has advanced the project without complying with the legal requirement to test its impact under the EU Habitats Directive.

And they also say the project is contrary to the Wicklow development plan.

Mr Kingham and the sailing club and seeking to quash the council’s decision of July 3rd last to allow the track to proceed.

The new track would be made of crushed stone. It would be constructed on a route following the shoreline of the Blessington Lakes.

It would be suitable for walkers but also for those on MTB, gravel and possibly road bikes.

If it were to go ahead it would undoubtedly prove very popular considering the  spectacular location and scenery.

The project, in its current form, allows for the upgrading of existing tracks around the lakes. However, it also includes a considerable amount of new work.

It would include an estimated 100 new culverts and 18 bridges over larger streams. New fencing in some areas and some minor landscaping will be required.

The construction of the new track would involve excavation followed by the laying of a geotextile membrane.

The case is expected to be back in the High Court in Dublin in December.
