Cyclists are set to resist the use of cycle lanes in Dublin as parking bays for coaches bringing music fans to the Spices Girls concert in the city tomorrow.
Cyclists are set to gather at dedicated cycle lanes on Dublin's north side to resist their use as parking bays for coaches taking concert-goers to the Spices Girls in Croke Park.
The gig tomorrow has seen the Garda put in place a security and traffic management plan; as it must do for any major public event.
In-keeping with previous arrangements for similar events, the two-way dedicated cycle lanes on Alfie Byrne Road, joining Clontarf to East Wall, have been dedicated as parking areas for coaches coming from all over the country.
For all of Friday afternoon until the gig is over and the coaches have departed late that night, the segregated cycle lanes will be parking spaces.
That means just as the capital's rush hour is reaching its height, arguably the most established and one of the most heavily used segregated cycle lanes in Dublin will be out of bounds for cyclists.
I Bike Dublin is organising one of its actions from 4pm at the location. Its actions have been run all over the city and involve cyclists forming a static human chain to prevent driver encroachments into cycle lanes.
It is calling on cyclists to join its protest action to protect the lanes; urging cyclists to meet at the bottle bank at 5pm on Alfie Byrne Road.
