
The founder of one of the longest and largest participation cycling sportives in Ireland, Jim Breen, has been charged with drink driving and has appeared in court. The alleged drink driving offence occurred two weeks ago.

The founder of one of Ireland’s biggest and longest cycling sportives, Jim Breen, has been charged with drink driving.
It is alleged Mr Breen was driving over the legal alcohol limit in Kerry a fortnight ago.
Cycle Against Suicide was started by entrepreneur Jim Breen. It arose as a result of his appearance on RTE’s The Secret Millionaire programme.
The sportive continues for two weeks and covers a total course of 1,100km. The aim of the event is to raise awareness about mental health and to fundraise for the same cause.
It has been one of the real success stories of the cycling boom; getting thousands of cyclists to take part and raising millions of Euros over the 14-day event.
As well as raising money, the event also increases general awareness around mental health.
It also aims to publicise the supportsavailable for anyone battling depression, self harm, or who are at risk of suicide or those bereaved by suicide.
It aims to create a very tangible and practical opportunity for people who want to support those who have been affected by suicide.
Mr Breen appeared in Killarney District Court yesterday. The alleged drink driving case relates to September 19th last.
With an address at Sandy Lane, Ardfert, Co Kerry, Mr Breen is charged with driving with excess alcohol in his system at Clasheen, Killarney.
His lawyer applied to the court yesterday for all of the documents in the case.
A technology entrepreneur, Mr Breen’s case was adjourned by Judge James O’Connor to December 5th.
