Cutting turf to logging trees; what top Irish riders do in winter

Rest is a crucially important part of training and no month in the year is as synonymous with rest as October.

It's the month where those who have had a long season racing and training switch off and recharge the batteries.

We went around the country and canvassed opinion to see what Irish riders of all categories are up to.

And the answers we got back just keep on getting better...


Jake Gray

Category: Junior

Age: 17

When did you stop training? “I stopped right after the World Championships in Richmond at the end of September.”

When will you start training? “I took about two weeks completely off the bike after the Worlds and then I started back into some easy enjoyable riding there about a week ago, nothing serious.

What things do you like to do in the off-season? “I enjoy catching up with some friends, maybe go out a few nights. I also like having a month eating what I want. I also enjoy circuit training and other fitness than cycling

 


Conor Hennebry

Club: Carrick Wheelers

Category: A2

Age: 22

When did you stop training? “I stopped training about a week after the Wexford 2-day.”

When will you start training? “I started back training at the end of September but I was tipping away all the time, I get bored if I don’t train but I do nothing structured now.”

What things do you like to do in the off-season? “I do a bit of everything really, circuit training, few nights out on the town, a bit of football as well. Keeping the girlfriend happy is a big part of my off season!”

When did you stop training? “I don't take too long off at all. I was on the TT bike on the turbo today but I'll rest tomorrow. ”

When will you start training? “I will be forced off the bikes for two weeks from this Wednesday, it's outside my control so I'll see how that goes.”

What things do you like to do in the off-season? “Play guitar/sing, watch movies with family, read training blogs online, write economics articles.”

Age: 18

When did you stop training? “After a Pro Kermesse in Kortrijk in Belgium last month.”

When will you start training? “The Tuesday before my first race....not...I'm back now training full-time and ready to give it a good lash.”

What things do you like to do in the off-season? “Foot turf, log a few trees and get my hair cut.”

 


Siobhán Horgan

Team: Aquablue

Age: 37

When did you stop training? “I stopped training immediately after World Championships last month. I didn't do anything since then. I’ve enjoyed the time off but I’m motivated to get back on the bike now.”

When will you start training? “Normally I go running in the off-season but that's not an option anymore because of the potential for injury and I am gutted about it.”

What things do you like to do in the off-season? “I’m considering doing a bit of cyclo-cross instead. I borrowed a bike so I might give it a go in a few weeks’ time.”
