Cut (literally) to the bone; photos of An Post rider Eoin McCarthy's bad road rash

These photos, especially the one below of Eoin McCarthy's ankle, are definitely not for the squeamish.

Having been based in Belgium for a couple of seasons, Eoin McCarthy’s progress and his performances in an Irish jersey at the Nations Cup international U23 series landed him a place at An Post-Chainreaction this year.

He did well in his first outings and managed to get up the road for a prolonged period in the season-opening Grand Prix Cycliste la Marseillaise (UCI 1.1).

However, he was less fortunate last Sunday in the one-day Omloop van het Waasland; a 192km UCI ranked 1.2 event in Belgium.

He picked up some pretty serious road rash – as these photos demonstrate – and says the hole in his ankle, below, is about the size of a €1 coin.

He hit the deck hard at around 50kmph halfway through the race when a rider fell in front of him and he had nowhere to go but down.

“I’ve had some stitches and unfortunately I’ll need some time off to recover now,” he told stickybottle.

“I was just starting to feel strong so it’s disappointing but I’m determined to come back stronger than ever.”

He said despite having deep cuts he was very thankful to his team for looking after him when he came down so heavily.

For the uninitiated; road rash is essentially bad grazing to the skin caused by a rider hitting the ground hard at speed.

McCarthy said this hole in his ankle is about the size of a €1 coin and required stitching; ouch!!
