Criticism of cycle lane in Kerry near latest cycling fatality

The Kerry Cycling Campaign has taken to social media to highlight how narrow the cycle lane is on the stretch of road where the latest Irish cycling death took place.

A 39-year-old man was killed while cycling on the N86 Tralee to Dingle road on Tuesday night.

News of the crash broken in the hours that followed. And the man's death was sadly confirmed by the Garda yesterday morning.

The fatal crash, which also involved two motorists in cars, occurred in the townland of Tonevane, Tralee, at approximately 8.15pm.

Kerry Cycling Campaign said the photos it has shared are of the cycle lane along a stretch of road close to where the man died.

It believes the photos were taken six years ago and said the road markings had faded since then.

"That yellow line is not the road verge but what we in Ireland refer to as 'cycle infrastructure'," it said.

"And if that's not bad enough, those pictures are from street view taken six years ago.

“That 'cycle lane' is barely visible in places now. Hope this is noted in the investigations (by) Garda Traffic and the Road Safety Authority.”

The poor cycle lane runs for about 1.6km from Tonevane to Currahee.
