Crashed rider's photos and "give us a chance" plea goes viral

When this cyclist was hit by a car for the second time and sustained these injuries he posted the photos online with a plea to motorists to "give us cyclists a chance".

When an Australian cyclist bravely decided to share these photos of the horrible injuries he sustained after being knocked from his bike for the second time in a few months, he couldn't have imagined they would go viral.

But such were the nature of Zac Rodgers' wounds and the strength of his appeal to motorists to "give us cyclists a chance" that his Facebook post (scroll down) is spreading across the world.

The wounds he suffered to his face and head are also a reminder of the benefits of wearing a helmet, even if they are not compulsory in Ireland.

Rodgers, from Brisbane in Queensland, had the photos taken while still raw and in a neck brace, clearly exasperated at having been mowed down for the second time.

After his crash on Thursday he posted the photos with the following message, which is fast becoming a global hit.

“Everyone has an opinion of cyclists. Great, good, bad and ugly. That is fine.

“But what people seem to forget is that we're not 'cyclists' we are human beings. Fellow human beings using transport.

“I've been hit by a car twice in the last few months. Does that make me second guess going for a ride? Yes. Does it make me consider not using the road? Sure.

“But the issue here is neither of these incidents were my fault. I had a right to be on the road. BOTH times the car made an error that resulted in my injury.

“The first time, they simply didn't look before merging - I watched their face.

“This morning, a van who missed their left turn, decided that they were going to go for it anyway, no warning, no indicator, pulling straight into me. I went under a 3T van. BOTH times could've been avoided.

“As humans, and cyclists - give us a look, give us space. Give us a chance.”

Well said sir!

In bits: As well as his face injuries and the brace that was required for his neck, Rodgers was left with some nasty road rash.

The helmet Rodgers was wearing when he came off.
