The opening half of the men's junior road race at the world championships has been a complete mess with a string of crashes, one of which has claimed Irish riders Ronan Tuomey and Xeno young. At the time of writing a 14-rider break featuring TT world champion Brandon McNulty is pulling clear of the bunch.

The Irish junior team have suffered disastrous fortune at the world championships in Doha today after two of the three-man team were involved in a crash.

First-year juniors Ronan Tuomey and Xeno Young hit the deck after around 50 kilometres of racing but both are back up and trying to chase the bunch.

The crash was caused by a touch of wheels towards the rear of the peloton on the right-hand side of the road as the break was trying to establish itself.

Toumey was one of the first on the floor as he was squeezed and had nowhere to go but he inadvertently fell into the back wheel of Young and the Powerhouse Sport man also went down, though he did well to get the speed down.

Young was able to remount quickly and get going again but Tuomey took a bit longer as he’d taken a heavier fall.

The race, like is often the case, has been characterised by some frenetic action but a few too many spills.

At the time of writing we understand Jake Gray is in the bunch but a dangerous 14-rider break is forging clear of the peloton.

In the break is the winner of the time-trial, USA’s Brandon McNulty.
