The latest Covid19 restrictions announced by the Government on Friday evening have implications for cyclists who live in Dublin and for some events that were set to go ahead in the county.
Two races in Dublin this weekend have already been
cancelled. And while riders who live in Dublin will still be able to travel
outside the county for national championship events, all other racing is out
for them for the next three weeks.
That will likely end the season for many Dublin-based
riders as they now face a period of not being able to race in Dublin and not
being able to travel to any other county to race save for a small number of
exceptions.
These exceptions exist because sporting events at the
level of national championships are effectively not impacted by the latest
restrictions.
The latest set of restrictions on Dublin-based riders and
most racing in the county arise because Dublin has been moved to Level 3 on the
new ‘Living with Covid-19’ plan.
The other 25 counties in the Republic remain of Level 2,
meaning there is no change for any cyclists living in those counties or for any
racing in those counties.
However, because Dublin has been moved to Level 3 all
racing in Dublin except national championships events is cancelled for at least
three weeks.
And Dublin-based cyclists can only ride races outside of
Dublin if those events are national championship events.
The races that can still take place in Dublin during the
next three weeks are:
- Elite Paracycling Road National Championships – September 25th
- Elite Paracycling Track National Championships - September 26th
- Elite Team Sprint-Pursuit-Keirin National Championship – October 10th
In light of the guidelines two fixtures that had been set
for Dublin this weekend are cancelled. These are the Master’s Track National
Championship and Women’s Intermediate League Round 3.
Dublin-based riders will be eligible to compete in these
events:
- Elite National Road Championships – October 1st to 4th
- Elite Paracycling Road National Championships September 25th
- Elite Paracycling Track National Championships September 26th
- Elite Team Sprint-Pursuit-Keirin National Championship – October 10th
For Dublin-based riders who have already paid in advance for races they cannot now ride, Cycling Ireland said refunds will be available.
Cyclists in Dublin are also advised they should train in pods up to a maximum of 15 riders.
