The women’s road racing scene has been given a welcome end of season boost with news that the organisers of the An Post Rás na mBan have secured financial backing from Coast Coffee to stage a new classic race at the end of next month.

The ‘Costa Autumn Classic’ is being promoted in order that those women riding Rás na mBan will have another significant event to target with the form that they bring out of that stage race in Co Kerry.

The new event is going ahead on Sunday, September 23rd, over 70kms in Co Meath. It will be run over the Dorey’s Forge circuit, which is well known to all of those who race regularly in Leinster.

It will be three laps of that circuit with the finish at Shanks Mare pub in Moynalvey near Summerhill.

Open to all female riders from U16 to elites, it is expected to attract a top field including many of those women who take part in Rás na mBan. That race is supported by both An Post and Louis Moriarty’s Sneem Hotel, running from September 9th to 13th.

The ‘Costa Autumn Classic’ is being organised by Valerie Considine, who is also one of the main people behind Rás na mBan. She is being supported by Cycling Ireland’s women commission in running the one-day race in Co Meath and believes the new event will be a great way to bring the domestic season to a close.

“Lots of riders are carrying great form into Rás na mBan and from the various leagues and open events run this year. We believe the Costa Autumn Classic will be an important addition to the race calendar and with the focus fully on the women’s race, it will be a great way to celebrate another great year of racing in 2012.”

“With support from Costa Coffee and generous assistance from Orla McEvoy of the Women’s Commission, we’re looking forward to making it an event to remember and an absolute ‘must-do’ for racers from all over Ireland.”

The race promises a generous prize fund with prizes for the first six over the line along with a range of other unplaced category prizes.
