Dunne is hopeful his form is building up to taking a win soon
Irish U23 international Conor Dunne has put his Nations Cup turn of bad luck behind him and is gradually improving his form in Belgium, going close to his first victory of the season at the weekend.
Dunne (‘Vl Technics – Abutriek’) came down with food poisoning in the Irish team camp at the U23 Nations Cup in France and Holland last month and was forced out of La Cote Picarde and the ZLM Tour as a result.
However, he told stickybottle he was pleased with his progress in recent weeks, finishing second in a race in Belgium at the weekend after being to the fore throughout.
“It was a 1.12B kermesse race in Breendonk, north-east Brussels; 155 starters and 120km. I was feeling really good and made the break after 50km or so.”
With 15 riders in the escape, he attacked with two laps remaining and took two other riders with him, with the trio staying clear until the finish.
“With 2km to go the eventual winner offered me €150 for the win but I obviously declined it. The other guy in the break accepted the offer so I was up against 2 versus 1 in the sprint. I ended up leading it out and only just got pipped at the end. It would have been awesome to get the win but I was happy with second.”
The past fortnight has seen him put together a good run, bagging fourth in a kermesse in Kruishoutem when he worked over the break with his team mate, who got away for victory.
Last Saturday week he was sixth in a race in Vilvoorde, Brussels; a 1.12A race which is ranked higher than a kermesse.
“That had 130 starters and I was pleased with how I rode; making the breakaway with 60km to go with six guys before being caught by another six guys with 9km to go. There was a lot of cat and mouse at the finish and I maybe got out-pokered a bit, but I was still pleased with how I rode.”
“I feel that I'm in really good form at the minute so I’m really hopeful that I can pick a win up in the next few weeks.”
